Festive Chess

While we won’t be meeting on December 27th, chess club starts up again on 3rd January. There are no league games, so depending on attendance and interest, I’ll happily arrange a tournament amongst those present. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Summer Programme!

I know it's the middle of winter, but to save a mad rush nearer the time, I'm looking to hear from you about the summer programme. If you'd like to drop me an email (via the contact page), or leave a comment below, that's fine ... alternatively, you can fill in the survey I've put together here: Summer Programme Survey.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Club Championship

Colin Roberts, our Club Championship organiser, is keen to start the next Club Championship at the end of this month in the hope that it will run better than last year. As before, there will be two groups divided to give the best fit to the grading range of the players involved; typically, this results in an open section and an under 120 or 125 division, but this can vary.

If you would like to take part (probable maximum number of games to play between now and May is five or six, minimum number probably two or three; games can be played at Club nights or elsewhere) please e-mail Colin to this effect no later than October 31st. E-mail, too, if you have any questions about the competition.

Colin's email address can be found on the contacts page.

The New Season

With August nearly over, it won't be long until the new season begins. Here's a quick to do list which you might find helpful.
  1. Sign up for the Jamboree (Weds 19th September at the club) by emailing Bob.
  2. Get in touch with your team captain if you haven't already. If you don't know who that is or don't have their contact details, ask Bob.
  3. Join the ECF, contact me (Steve) with any problems, or put questions in the comments here.
  4. Pay your club membership, contact Hugo with any queries.
  5. Come along to the next club night on Thursday 6th September to blow away the cobwebs.
You can find all our contact details here.

N.B. We're back to weekly meetings from the 6th September. See you there!

Club Membership for 2012-13

In a change from previous years, to play as part of a team, you will need to join the ECF as well as the club. ECF membership will cost from £13 for adults or £9 for Juniors. A discount of £1 will be available for those joining online. The ECF facility for that should be available from mid-July 2012. For more information visit the ECF website, but feel free to ask questions either at the club or here.

Club membership fees for the 2012-13 season are as follows:

Adult (under 65):£30
Adult (over 65):£15
Junior (18 and under):£15
Unwaged:£15

While team members will need to pay for ECF membership, the changes at the ECF have allowed us to lower our membership fees. The figures above represent a 25% reduction on 2011-12 membership fees.

Please get in touch with our Treasurer, Hugo Smith, to arrange payment. As ever, new players are welcome to attend a taster evening or two before joining.

Thetford Rapidplay

Members may be interested in attending the Thetford Rapidplay. The event will be held on Saturday, September 15th, more information, including an entry form, can be found here.

Teams for next season

(From the Match Secretary)

With two AGMs (ours and the League's) fast approaching, it's time to make some decisions about teams for next season.  Would you please let me know (bobjoneschess [at] btinternet.com) what teams you would like to play in from September?  The choice is:
* BACL Div 1, 2 and 3
* Suffolk League Div 1 and 2
* Roger Goldsmith
Please indicate also if you are prepared to captain a team.
Many thanks!
Bob

New-look website

I think Steve has done a great job with the new-look website!  If you've played any interesting games this season, send them to Steve and he'll put them on the Games page.

We're still waiting for a date for the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup Final.  Having beaten Ipswich in the Suffolk Final, we are due to play Norfolk & Norwich in the main Final.  It's likely to be some time in early July, because half their team (strong Juniors) are involved with exams until then.  I'll publish the date here as soon as we know it.
